Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying these treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
