Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
