A man who contaminated candy with sleeping medication and provided them to youngsters at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual offences against two children aged nine and ten years old.

The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a multiple criminal counts when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Yet, he denied one of the sexual offences he was accused of, which was concerning a young boy.

Ruben was held in detention prior to a further hearing on 28 November.

'Candy game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, outlined Ruben's offending to the court.

She said his targets were disadvantaged youngsters who were participating in a youth camp which he ran.

Ruben played a "candy game" with the children, Mrs Prior said, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were settling down and tell them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings Ruben had played this game with the boys "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She said the man had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the youngsters being "overexcited from fun", until his stepson had concerns in recently.

Mrs Prior KC added: "This year his stepchild had concerns about the situation, with valid cause.

"They decided to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

The prosecutor said objects including infant oil, Vaseline and syringes were found, and his stepson alerted the authorities about his worries.

She explained the defendant continued to engage in the "sweet game" with six boys that evening - that Saturday - and they were everyone unwell the following morning.

"Law enforcement" had not responded by that stage," she added.

The regulatory agency, the police conduct office, previously told that it was investigating the police response of the situation.

The legal representative stated the youngsters were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the family member contacted the law enforcement a second time.

She said Ruben then engaged in the "sweet game" in a room of five youngsters.
